Indian PM Narendra Modi and UAE President Mohamed Bin Zayed (MBZ) in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, 9 January 2024

On Tuesday, Indian PM Narendra Modi and UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan held bilateral talks in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. On the sidelines of the meeting, India and the UAE signed three MoUs on the expansion of bilateral investment cooperation in the renewable energy sector, food park development, and innovative healthcare projects. Additionally, an MoU was signed between Dubai-based DP World and the Gujarat government on developing green and sustainable ports.


Former Bhutanese PM Tshering Tobgay’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP) won the parliamentary elections in the Himalayan Kingdom on Tuesday. The PDP won 30 seats in the 47-member parliament or National Assembly. The remaining seats were secured by the Bhutan Tendrel Party (BTP). Concerns regarding the economy and unemployment dominated the country’s fourth general elections.


The death toll from central Japan’s powerful New Year’s Day earthquake has reached 202, with 102 people still missing, local authorities said Tuesday. Meanwhile, more than 26,000 people are residing in evacuation centres in the Ishikawa Prefecture, where concerns about the spread of infectious diseases have risen following reports of around a dozen COVID-19 cases.


Taiwan issued a presidential alert on Tuesday after China successfully launched the Einstein Probe satellite, which it says aims to gather astronomical data. The Taiwanese alert noted in Chinese that the satellite flew over the island’s southern airspace and urged the public to be safe. Taiwanese Foreign Minister Joseph Wu explained that the alert was issued because of possible “debris.”


Gabriel Attal was chosen on Tuesday as France’s youngest-ever and first gay PM, as President Emmanuel Macron seeks a fresh start for the rest of his tenure amid mounting political pressure from the far right over an immigration law that expands the government’s ability to deport foreigners. Attal said that his priorities include making security an “absolute priority” and promoting ideals of “authority and respect for others.” He also pledged to enhance public services, such as schools and the healthcare system, as well as advocate for “better immigration control.


Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian held a phone conversation with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, on Tuesday. They discussed bilateral relations and regional developments, including the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the Red Sea. Amirabdollahian talked about several aspects of bilateral relations with his Russian counterpart, including transit and the two countries’ comprehensive and strategic cooperation agreement, the Islamic Republic’s foreign ministry said in a statement. Both sides also reviewed the ongoing construction project to build the Rasht-Astara railway in Iran.
