Dmitry Medvedev, former Russian President and currently the Deputy Secretary of Russia’s Security Council, stated on Tuesday that NATO’s increased military support to Ukraine brings World War Three ever closer.

As the first day of the NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania came to a close, Medvedev warned that the Western military alliance’s pledges of support to Kyiv would not dissuade Russia from accomplishing its goals in Ukraine.

World War 3 Getting Closer

The former Russian President wrote on Telegram, “The completely crazy West could not come up with anything else […] In fact, it’s a dead end. World War Three is getting closer.”

“What does all this mean for us? Everything is obvious. The special military operation will continue with the same goals,” he added, referring to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

According to Russia’s state-run news agency TASS, Medvedev also declared that Moscow’s objective of preventing the “neo-Nazi group” in Kyiv from joining NATO was now “impossible,” and ousting the Ukrainian government was necessary.

In addition to warning of another world war, Medvedev claimed on Tuesday that Russia utilises cluster munitions, which he labelled an “inhuman weapon” amid reports of Ukraine using them in battle.

Russia refers to its actions in Ukraine as a “special military operation,” while Kyiv and its allies accuse Moscow of launching an unprovoked war to seize territory and dominate a sovereign nation.

Russian Officials Condemn the West

According to a TASS report on Wednesday, Russia’s Ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, joined the rising chorus of NATO condemnation, stating that the Western military alliance aimed to deploy troops on Russia’s borders.

Antonov stated:

The meeting in Vilnius demonstrated the bloc’s intention to concentrate more and more troops on Russian borders. We have nowhere to retreat. The aggressive decisions of the Summit will not undermine Russia’s confidence in the rightness of its actions. We have no doubt that all goals of the Special Military Operation will be fully achieved.

The ambassador added that, after the Vilnius summit, the NATO leaders’ declaration has reaffirmed the alliance’s “anti-Russian drive,” which has mobilised all of its resources “into the fight against [Russia].”

In response to US’ decision last week to supply cluster munitions to Ukraine, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu stated on Tuesday that Moscow would deploy “similar” weapons in Ukraine if the US delivered cluster bombs to Kyiv. Shoigu also warned that Russian cluster munitions are “much more effective than American ones, their range is wider and more diverse.”
