The Delhi Police Special Cell has arrested six terrorists who were planning to carry out attacks during the festival season in India.

The arrests followed raids by the Special Cell in multiple cities on Tuesday. One terrorist was arrested in Kota, Rajasthan, two in Delhi, and three in Uttar Pradesh. The men divulged that their group included around 15 people who could speak Bangla.

Those arrested have been identified as: Jaan Mohammed Sheikh (47), a resident of Maharashtra; Osama alias Sami (22), a resident of Jamia Nagar; Moolchand alias Saaju (47), a resident of Rae Bareli; Zeeshan Qamar (28), a resident of Allahabad; Mohd Abu Bakar (23), a resident of Bahraich; and Mohd Amir Javed (31), a resident of Lucknow.

Two of the arrested were allegedly trained by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and returned recently after learning to operate explosives and AK-47 rifles. Officials claimed that the intelligence agency was working with Dawood Ibrahim’s brother, Anees Ibrahim, to plan attacks in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra.

At a press conference, Special Cell Commissioner of Police (Special CP) Neeraj Thakur said, “Two of the accused, Osama and Zeeshan, got training this year in Pakistan and were getting instructions from the ISI. They were asked to conduct recce of suitable locations in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh for planting IEDs (improvised explosive devices).”

The police said the accused formed two different teams. One team was supposed to arrange funds through illegal routes, and the other, led by Anees Ibrahim, was tasked with smuggling firearms into India from across the border. In this regard, police officials have seized a kilogram of RDX, two hand grenades, two IEDs, and a pistol of Italian make, smuggled from Pakistan.

“Underworld operative Sameer, a close contact of Dawood’s brother Anees Ibrahim, was hired by a Pakistan-based person, and he connected with underworld operatives hiding in Pakistan to ensure delivery of IEDs, sophisticated weapons and grenades to different places in India,” the Special CP said. He added that the arrested persons were tasked with executing separate stages of the now-foiled terror attack.

However, the police officer did not specify locations where the blasts were planned or those supposed to be attacked.
