In a bid to ease growing tensions with its Asian neighbours, China emphasised its commitment to regional diplomatic initiatives, particularly the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and highlighted booming trade relations.

Comments from China

Lou Qinjian, spokesperson for China’s parliament, the National People’s Congress (NPC), addressed concerns regarding the South China Sea dispute and broader regional issues. While asserting China’s commitment to safeguarding territorial sovereignty, Lou emphasised dialogue and consultation with relevant countries for peaceful resolutions.

“China will continue to safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests,” he stated.

Regional Tensions

Tensions have risen, particularly with the Philippines, as the latter asserts its rights in the disputed region, supported by the US. The spokesperson emphasised China’s commitment to peaceful dialogue to ensure peace and tranquillity in the South China Sea.

Lou also indirectly referred to the eastern Ladakh border standoff with India, expressing China’s opposition to bloc confrontation, alluding to the Quad alliance involving the US, India, Japan, and Australia.

BRI

The BRI took centre stage in Lou’s address, where he emphasised its benefits and inclusivity. China touted the initiative as a means of delivering tangible benefits to participating countries, driving social and economic development.

Despite criticisms and concerns about debt burdens faced by participating nations, China highlighted the growing number of cooperation agreements signed and projects initiated under the BRI.
