Indian PM Narendra Modi will inaugurate three semiconductor projects worth approximately Rs1.25 lakh crore ($15.8 billion approximately) today through video conferencing, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) announced.

Overview

These projects hold significant strategic importance, with the foundation stone being laid for a Semiconductor fabrication facility at the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR) in Gujarat, as well as Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facilities in Morigaon, Assam, and Sanand, Gujarat.

The Dholera Semiconductor fabrication facility, spearheaded by Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL), represents a milestone under the Modified Scheme for setting up semiconductor fabs in India. Its investment surpasses Rs 91,000 crore, marking a significant stride towards establishing India’s first commercial semiconductor fab.

Meanwhile, the Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Morigaon, also led by TEPL under the Modified Scheme for Semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP), will see an investment of approximately Rs 27,000 crore.

Further, the OSAT facility in Sanand will witness an investment of around Rs 7,500 crore.

Comments from the PMO

“It has been the vision of the Prime Minister to position India as a global hub for semiconductor design, manufacturing and technology development, fostering the creation of employment opportunities for the nation's youth,” the PMO stated.
It added that “through these facilities, the semiconductor ecosystem will be strengthened and will get a firm footing in India.”

Additionally, these units are expected to “provide employment to thousands of youth in the semiconductor industry as well as catalyse employment generation in related sectors like electronics, telecom etc.”

“The programme will witness massive participation of youngsters including thousands of college students, along with leaders from the Semiconductor Industry,” the PMO concluded.

Comments from PM Modi

In a post on X, PM Modi said that 13 March 2024 is “a special day in India’s efforts to become a hub for semiconductors.”

“Tomorrow, will take part in the ‘India’s Techade: Chips for Viksit Bharat’ programme and lay the foundation stones for three semiconductor facilities worth over Rs 1.25 lakh crore,” he announced.

“Among the highlights of the programme will be the participation of students from over 60,000 institutions. I would urge youngsters, and particularly those passionate about tech, to join tomorrow’s programme,” Modi added.

These endeavours are poised to bolster India’s semiconductor ecosystem, providing a robust foundation for its expansion.
