At Tuesday’s BRICS meeting to discuss the Israel-Gaza conflict, Indian External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar welcomed “all efforts of the international community towards de-escalation.”

In his address, Jaishankar noted that the concerns of the Palestinian people “must be addressed in a serious and sustainable manner,” which can “only happen with a two-state solution [...] based on peaceful co-existence.”

The conflict in Gaza has been “causing immense human suffering, including to civilians, elderly, women, and children,” the FM added. He also spoke of the “urgent need to ensure that humanitarian aid and relief effectively and safely reach the population of Gaza” and that “all hostages are released.” “We believe that there is a universal obligation to observe international humanitarian law,” he stressed.

Referring to “the terrorist attack of 7th October,” Jaishankar said that “where terrorism itself is concerned, none of us should or can compromise with it.” He strongly condoned hostage-taking and large-scale civilian casualties.

The diplomat said that India, “emphasises peaceful resolution of conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy.” In this regard, he highlighted PM Modi’s efforts of consulting with several world leaders to help “create conditions for peace and restart direct and meaningful peace negotiations.”

The EAM also highlighted India’s longstanding efforts to support “the socio-economic welfare of the Palestinian people” and the “strengthening of their national institutions.”

As part of India’s relief efforts for the same, Jaishankar acknowledged that New Delhi had sent “70 tonnes of humanitarian assistance, including 16.5 tonnes of medicines and medical supplies,” with the help of Egypt. “Our relief assistance will continue,” he noted.
